  • Why?

Let me start by saying The Crimson Idol is one of my favorite albums of all time. I bought an import version on cassette when it first came out. From what I remember, it took awhile for it to come out in the States and I couldn't wait that long. In most cases , bands will re-record (Testament's First Strike Still Deadly) or remix (Nevermore's Enemies Of Reality) because the original versions sounded poor. That is not the case here. The original Crimson Idol sounded great. Remaster sounded even better. Still does! Which is why I can't understand Blackie's logic on this one. Still, I wanted to hear what he did with it, and based on Doctor Rockter, I'm not thrilled. Sure, it sounds a bit more modern, drums and bass guitar are more full, like most modern recordings, but the guitars are low in the mix like the original, which is fine I guess. Maybe he could have had them more up front and menacing sounding. But my problem is the backing vocals. Lead vocals are actually pretty impressive, considering Blackie, like the rest of us, is up there in age. To my ears, it sounds like he used the backing vocals from the original Crimson Idol. It sounds wrong. Almost sounds like some auto-tuning is going on between his lead vox and the old backing vox. It just sounds off, to the point of annoying. I love the original so much that this version will just mess with head, just like the Megadeth Remix-Remasters disaster did. I'm sorry if anybody from the band happens to read this, I'm sure you put a lot of hard work into this, but why fix something that was already perfect?!!
